Market Realized P/L Ratio

The Bitcoin Market Realized P/L Ratio divides total realized profit by total realized loss across the entire Bitcoin market, aggregating every age cohort into a single market-wide figure. Realized profit and loss are measured on-chain by comparing the price at which each coin last moved to the price at which it moves again: coins that transact above their acquisition price realize a profit, coins that transact below realize a loss. Summing both sides across all holders and taking the ratio produces one number that captures whether the network as a whole is spending into gains or losses.

Because the ratio includes all age cohorts without weighting toward long- or short-term holders, it offers an unbiased read on market-wide sentiment and profit/loss dynamics. Values above one indicate that realized profits are outpacing realized losses, consistent with a market spending into strength. Values below one indicate that losses dominate the realized flow, a signature of capitulation and stress. Movements between these regimes track the broad rhythm of the Bitcoin market rather than the behavior of any single group.

Use the ratio as a gauge of overall market health. Sustained readings well above one accompany periods of confident distribution, while collapses toward and below one tend to cluster around local bottoms where holders realize losses in aggregate.
