On-Chain Metrics
Measures risk-adjusted returns for each age cohort's realized profit and loss. Shows which holder cohorts achieve the best returns relative to their volatility, providing insights into trading efficiency.
The Bitcoin Realized P&L Sharpe Ratio measures risk-adjusted returns for realized profit and loss, broken down by age cohort. For each cohort of holders, it takes the realized profit and loss those coins generate when they move on-chain and divides that return by its volatility, applying the classic Sharpe framework to spent-output economics. The result expresses how efficiently a given cohort converts risk into realized gains rather than measuring raw profit alone.
The chart plots this ratio per holder cohort, so you can compare which age bands are achieving the best returns relative to how volatile their realized outcomes are. Higher readings for a cohort indicate more consistent, efficient realized profit; lower or negative readings indicate returns that are erratic or dominated by realized losses. Reading across cohorts shows where trading efficiency concentrates in the Bitcoin holder base at any point in the cycle.
Use the metric to gauge which segments of Bitcoin holders are being rewarded for the risk they carry. When shorter-age cohorts show strong risk-adjusted returns, active participants are trading efficiently; when efficiency skews toward longer-held coins, patient holders are capturing the better risk-adjusted outcomes. Comparing cohort trajectories over time helps identify shifts in who is driving profitable on-chain activity.
Check the selected asset, units, and cohort before comparing readings. Compare the metric over consistent dates and use related measures to understand what contributes to a change.
Addresses and on-chain cohorts do not identify individual people. Network designs and available histories differ, so a threshold observed on one asset may not transfer to another.
